Nobody’s Fool
by admin on Mar.30, 2009, under News, Security
With last nights segment on 60 minutes about Conficker.C the word is out. We have been following the development of this virus for the past several weeks as security companies are learning how to track, locate and hopefully remove this worm before it comes to fruition on April Fools Day.
Conficker.C is a variant of a virus and many anti-virus companies are already aware of its existence including; CA, Panda, Symantec, and McAfee. We would suggest you accept any urgent Microsoft updates that come up in the next few days to insure you are patched to prevent this vulnerability. Bitdefender has a tool to remove the variant of Conficker if you believe you may already be infected located here.
We will keep you updated with what we know so keep checking back here for any future updates. If you have any questions, please feel free to drop us a line.
*edit* We would like to take a minute and mention that as of April 1st the Conficker.C worm has remained dormant and there are no threats at the moment. We have seen an excessive amount of “software” coming out today that claims to remove the virus, please avoid any and all of these software titles unless you can check its validity. Some may just be an April Fool’s prank, but most are more likely just malware installers.
Bad Verizon!
by admin on Mar.09, 2009, under News
Interesting story from Gizmodo which you may want to know about. Verizon wireless is sending out notifications full of legal mumbo jumbo basically saying that if you do not “opt-out” within the time frame of 45 days, they have the right to share your personal information they have collected with thier “affiliates”. If you do not receive your bill in the mail you only recieve a message in your online account which isnt available at the moment (you can’t opt-out).
*edit* You can call this number to opt-out if you are having a difficult time getting any information from Verizon; 1-800-333-9956
In the opinion of this humble poster, I think this is a huge heaping pile of dung. The company that I have to pay every month per a contractual agreement for services, gets to take my personal information, even who I call and sell it to whomever they like? Think I’ll recieve anything for this? Lower cost wireless service? A discount? A crackerjack prize? No, I didnt think so.

If you havent checked out Netflix or its services yet, personally speaking I love the service myself. The convenience of thier dvd rental service is beyond compare, and with the addition of their streaming services, you can watch movies anytime the mood strikes you.

Beware: New phishing scheme out
by admin on Jan.16, 2009, under Phishing, Security
A new phishing scheme is beginning to come to light recently, often appearing to come from completely legit and trusted sites such as online banks, online retailers and social networking sites. Instead of using realistic looking fake emails or websites, “in-session” phishing works by using a JavaScript exploit that inserts a piece of code or instructions on your computer that can be activated by infected websites.
This will most often appear as your secured login to your trusted bank or favorite retailer has “timed out” for inactivity over a period of time, and request that you login again on a pop-up page or login that appears. Our golden rule always applies, if something doesnt look right, chances are it isnt. If you ever suspect something like this, its best to close all your browser windows, open a new one, and log onto your trusted site as you normally would.
We hope this tip makes you a safer and smarter netizen.
